Set Up Your UNC Accounts
Create the Only Name You’ll Ever Need (ONYEN):
The very first thing you should do as part of your onboarding process is to create the Only Name You’ll Ever Need, or ONYEN.
Your ONYEN gives you access to important UNC systems you will use frequently:
- Your UNC email
- The UNC library
- Office365
- The STATA virtual lab
- Digital Campus
- ConnectCarolina
Create Your UNC Email Account — and Check It Daily!
Your UNC email address will be the primary mode of communication between you and the University moving forward. All official communication about billing, registration and financial aid will be sent to your UNC email address. Please check this email account daily for important program information.
Set Up Your UNC Email:
- Log in to selfservice.unc.edu using your ONYEN and password.
- Click “Email Sign-Up” on the left-hand menu and follow the instructions to create your UNC email account and change your password.
- Check your email by visiting heelmail.unc.edu.
- Send an email from your new Heelmail account with the subject line “Go Tar Heels!” and your full name in the body of the email to studentsupport@onlinemph.unc.edu to confirm your account is activated.
Register for Two-Step Verification
UNC IT strongly recommends registering for two-step verification to protect your information. Many systems, including ConnectCarolina, are moving toward requiring two-step authentication to allow access.

Digital Campus
Digital Campus is your online campus. This is where your coursework is housed, as well as where you will go to attend your weekly live sessions. When classes begin, you will be logging in to Digital Campus on most days.
Accessing Digital Campus:
- After confirming your email account (Step 4 above) your Student Support Advisor (SSA) will create your Digital Campus account.
- Check your UNC email for a message from your SSA, who will send next steps and your username to access Digital Campus. Please note this may take a couple days.
- Log in to Digital Campus at https://digitalcampus.instructure.com/ and complete your Digital Campus profile. (You must have your ONYEN and email set up to do this.)
There is a dedicated Online Technical Support team ready 24/7 to support you. Contact information is below; you will also find it by clicking on the Support tab in the Digital Campus.
- Email: TechSupport@digitalcampus.2U.com
- Phone: 1-833-740-1273
- Chat (Quickest Response Time): Accessible within Digital Campus
Ensure Your Technology Is Fully Functional
Technology is vital to your success as a student in the online program. Prior to attending your first live session, you will need to secure and test the following:
- A computer with a webcam (see “Program Technical Requirements” in the Orientation Course)
- A consistent, quiet location to attend live sessions
- Strong, reliable internet access
- An Ethernet cord to hardwire to your internet router
- A headset with a noise-canceling microphone
- Recent versions of Firefox and Google Chrome browsers
- All necessary classroom software (e.g., Zoom, plug-ins)
